Player One è un romanzo del 2012 pieno zeppo di riferimenti agli anni ’80 (serie televisive, film, musica e videogiochi di quel periodo, vedi elenco a fondo pagina) e così familiare a chi come me ha respirato quell’atmosfera, ore e ore a giocare Dungeons & Dragons e a sognare la Terra di mezzo come il protagonista di questo bellissimo libro che nel 2017 uscirà a firma Steven Spielberg. A scriverlo è Ernest Cline, programmatore, nerd e cultore degli anni 80, nonchè autore di Fanboys (2009) uno dei più bei film sui nerd mai scritti e che ricorda molto i protagonisti di The big bang theory.

Sinossi
Il mondo è un brutto posto. Wade ha diciotto anni e trascorre le sue giornate in un universo virtuale chiamato OASIS, dove si fa amicizia, ci si innamora – si fa ciò che ormai è impossibile fare nel mondo reale, oppresso da guerre e carestie. Ma un giorno James Halliday, geniale creatore di OASIS, muore senza eredi. L’unico modo per salvare OASIS da una spietata multinazionale è metterlo in palio tra i suoi abitanti: a ereditarlo sarà il vincitore della più incredibile gara mai immaginata. Wade risolve quasi per caso il primo enigma, diventando di colpo, insieme ad alcuni amici, l’unica speranza dell’umanità. Sarà solo la prima di tante prove: recitare a memoria le battute di Wargames, penetrare nella Tyrell Corporation di Blade Runner, giocare la partita perfetta a Pac-Man, sfidare giganteschi robot giapponesi e così via, in una strabiliante rassegna di missioni di ogni tipo, ambientate nell’immaginario pop degli anni ’80, a cui OASIS è ispirato.
